make your own - mini magnetic planter
Open up that craft locker and get your glue gun ready because we’re bringing you another DIY! This one is for the plant lovers out there, who can’t resist just adding one more succulent to their collection even though they physically don’t have space for any more in their home. Well, now you do, because we’re showing you how to make mini magnetic planters! They stick straight to your locker so you don’t even need to clear up any shelf space - how convenient is that? They look pretty cute too, so you will definitely end up making more than one. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
What you need:
- White large stones
- White small stones
- Potting soil - depends on what type of plant you are putting in your pot, but RepotIt on Etsy do lots of different types for succulents, cacti and houseplants!
- Moss
- Succulent or small plant
- Spoon
- Metal tin - empty and cleaned (we used a Keen’s Mustard tin)
- 2 x 6mm flat neodymium magnets - you may need more if your planter is bigger and heavier once full so bear this in mind!
- Hot glue gun + glue sticks
Step by step
one.
Hot glue on the magnets to the back of the container + make sure they are equally spaced to carry the weight. You may need to add extra magnets once your plant is potted if it is a bit too heavy, so don’t put your glue gun away yet, just in case!
two.
Time to start potting! Add large stones to fill ¼ of the tin for drainage.
three.
Next, add moss to cover the stones and absorb additional moisture.
four.
Add a layer of soil on top of the moss and place the roots of the succulent in. Then add more soil around the plant to make it nice + snug in its new home.
five.
Finish by adding small stones to cover the surface of the dirt.
six.
Stick the magnet to your locker and say hello to your new mini plant friend! Guaranteed to make you smile whenever you open your locker.
seven.
To keep your plant happy, spray lightly with a spray bottle once a week (remove it from your locker to do so or wipe the locker afterwards!) and remember to say nice things to it :)
