Mustard announces an exclusive collection for MoMA Design Store.
It’s an iconic collaboration, and a personal one too. When Mustard co-founder Becca went to New York in 2023, there was one stop on her itinerary that was non-negotiable.
“All I wanted was to go to MoMA.”
With a background in conceptual art, and now the creative director at Mustard, it’s no surprise Becca found herself standing in front of Yves Klein’s 1961 painting Blue Monochrome, shedding a few tears. “Colour has always had a profound impact on me. To see this transcendent piece up close reminded me that seeking beauty isn’t superficial or superfluous, it’s part of what makes us human. In some small way, creating beautiful things at Mustard feels like an answer to that same impulse, to make things that have meaning.”
Bringing Mustard to MoMA
When we had the opportunity to design an exclusive Mustard collection for MoMA Design Store, it felt like a full circle moment. “It is incredibly special to think that something I designed will sit inside a space that holds so much creative energy, history and inspiration,” Becca says.
Celebrating the meeting of art and design, this collection represents Mustard’s signature blend of joyful colour and attention to detail. “As a furniture brand known for bringing colour and personality to everyday storage, we believe the spaces we live and work in should reflect who we are,” Becca says. “That’s the idea behind everything we make, and our collaboration with MoMA is no different.”
Colour outside the lines
This one-of-a-kind edit is inspired by artists who think outside the box and draw outside the lines. “There’s a sense of playfulness and the unexpected in all the pieces that the MoMA Design Store curates. For this collection we wanted to bring Mustard's signature shapes to life with a unique mixed colour palette, and design details created just for the MoMA Design Store.”
The collection includes two locker styles, The Midi and The Lowdown, in an exclusive deconstructed colour palette. “The lockers feel like drawings to me, almost like they are outlines of their own shape coloured in with Mustard's carefully curated shades,” says Becca. “They are intentionally off beat, they're not symmetrical and the keyring colours connect to the top panel and the side panel to avoid anything feeling too matchy-matchy. Art is about seeing things differently and connecting the dots of seemingly disconnected subjects, ideas or interests. For me, this collection brings together different elements of my story and represents the interests that have stuck with me throughout my life: colour, beauty, art, design, storytelling and the joy of creating things that did not exist before.”
The Baskets in this collection come in a set of three primary colours and a specially curated set of The Buttons is designed to feel like a painter's palette. “Colour is at the core of everything we do at Mustard, so we’re really proud to have created a collection that feels at home at MoMA Design Store, but still feels unmistakably Mustard,” says Becca.
A study in detail
Mustard pieces are all about the considered details. “Our products are made from powder-coated steel, a material I was drawn to because it's durable and timeless, but there’s a real art to creating each piece” says Becca. “The surfaces are smooth and the lines are sharp, so we’re pedantic about every detail. It means the design takes time, but the results are products that are beautiful, functional and built to last.”
Mustard lockers already include features like magnetic-close doors, adjustable shelving, and internal cable holes, but for this exclusive collection we created custom MoMA keyrings to complement the signature Mustard medallion keyring. “The simple details are often the hardest to get right,” Becca says. “We started with sketches and renders and made multiple prototypes for testing before we landed on the right scale, proportion and colours for the two keyrings to feel like a beautiful mismatched pair.”
“When you open your locker, you'll discover another detail I adore – the colour printed instructions. The colour is totally practical as it's helpful for identifying the correct parts as you build your locker, but it also feels like a colouring book. It's as if someone took our plain black and white instructions and brought them to life by colouring in all the shapes.”
Designed for living
The Mustard MoMA collection may be inspired by the art world, but these are not museum pieces. The collection is designed for real life and real needs, whether that be adding colour to a dining room, creating an inspiring workspace or containing the chaos in children's rooms. Like every Mustard piece, this exclusive collection is made with versatility and function in mind.
They might just inspire you to colour outside the lines, too.
