Record collection organisation that looks good and stands the test of time? Music to our ears.
Vinyl record storage isn’t just about keeping your LPs on hand. Whether you’re a certified audiophile with a collection of hundreds, or you’re just starting out, keeping your records stored safely is crucial to their longevity. Mustard has the perfect collection of pieces made to store your records properly, keeping them in pristine condition and with space for your turntable, too. With 12 iconic colours to choose from, adjustable shelving for an exact fit, and the choice between fluted glass doors or powder coated steel, your record collection is about to hit its best note yet.
Are lockers good for record storage?
The humble milk crate has its place, but if you’re looking to take your vinyl storage to the next level and organise your records with a system, then Mustard has your solution. Storage boxes and crates will do in a pinch, but they only stack so high, offer little protection from dust, and make flipping through your collection a chore, which is why a dedicated piece of furniture wins for anything more than a starter stack. Lockers make ideal record storage cabinets thanks to their sturdy steel construction and lockable, magnetic-close doors. These keep your albums protected from dust and other elements that can degrade the sound quality over time. With adjustable shelves inside, you can ensure a snug fit for your LPs and avoid the warping and cracking that improper storage can cause.
What material makes the best vinyl record cabinet?
If your record collection tells us anything, it’s that you appreciate the classics and you invest in quality. Mustard ticks both those boxes – the vintage-inspired design is timeless with a nod to Mid-Century style, and the sturdy steel construction is made to outlast trends. While many popular cube-style record storage systems are made of particleboard which will degrade over time and can be too flimsy to support the weight of your collection, Mustard pieces are made of powder-coated steel which is known for its durability and longevity.
Note: when using The Mixer for record storage, only one shelf can be installed, creating two rows of records stored standing up.
What’s the best storage option for keeping records on display?
You’ve curated your record collection over time, so it makes sense that you’d want to show it off. Open shelving isn’t the best idea for long-term storage, since dust, humidity and exposure to the elements can distort and damage your vinyl. Mustard’s Glass lockers are the perfect solution, with a steel frame and fluted glass doors and side panels to let your LPs shine while keeping them protected. The Mixer is an ideal size for record storage, fitting 250-300 records over two rows (and they look great banked together as a duo or trio!) If you’re looking to go big, The Collector is our largest Glass piece and can hold between 650 - 800 records over four vertical tiers, depending on what’s in your collection.
Which Mustard piece is the best fit for your record storage?
Ready to find your perfect vinyl cabinet? The first question you’ll need to answer is how many records you want to fit inside.
Average record sizes:
- Records are generally 31.5cm, but can vary depending on the time they were produced.
- It’s best to leave around 0.5cm for the width of each record, with single LPs requiring less space and double or box sets taking up more room.
- We’d recommend factoring in some extra space above for clearance, and allowing room to flip comfortably between records without packing them in too tightly.
How many records do Mustard lockers fit inside?
- The Standard fits approximately 250-320 records, depending on how tightly you pack them and the mix of single and double LPs in your collection. These would be spaced in a single row with no shelf installed inside the locker. (It’s not just for records, either: The Standard also doubles as a TV and media unit.)
- The Lowdown comfortably fits two rows of records with a shelf in the middle. This would give you a capacity range of 330-390 records, again depending on how tightly you pack them and the mix of single and double LPs in your collection.
- The Midi gives you plenty of space for three rows of records, equating to a capacity of around 420-490 records.
- If you prefer to have your LPs a little more on display, The Mixer is a beautiful option with its fluted glass doors to show off your collection. The Mixer comfortably fits two rows of records with plenty of space to spare. This will give you a capacity of around 250-300 records.
- The Collector is our largest Glass locker and has room for four shelves of records, fitting 650-800 records inside.
What’s the best record player stand with storage?
A locker doubles as the perfect record player stand with storage. All of our lockers have space on top to style your turntable and accessories, or you can pop these onto a shelf inside if you prefer to keep them protected. With a handy cable hole in the back, our Original Locker collection would be the best choice if you want to store your turntable inside.
How to create a ‘now playing’ record display
